Water
leaking from the Flush Valve
BASIC FLUSH
VALVE REPAIR
1. Turn off the water at the supply valve (1) below
the toilet tank.
2. Flush toilet
to remove water from toilet tank. Sponge
out remaining water.
3. Check that
the lift wire (9) is screwed tightly onto tank ball
(10). If it will not stay tight lift wire or tank ball
has
stripped threads. Replace if needed.
4. Check that the bottom of tank ball (10) is not worn
or
damaged. Replace if needed.
5. If replacement of tank ball is needed, take your
old
tank ball to a plumbing hardware dealer to insure a
proper match. You may wish to replace your tank ball
with a tank flapper, as a dapper needs fewer repairs
than a conventional tank ball.
6. When replacing the tank ball (10) you must realign
the
lift wire (9) and the tank ball (10) for proper seating.
To
realign, loosen screw on guide (11) and move the
guide right to left and up and down until tank ball
seats evenly on the flush valve seat (12).
7. If your flush valve is a flapper type (13), inspect
the
flapper in the same manner as tank ball.
8. Check that the flush valve seat (12) is smooth and
free of
(debris. If flush valve seat (12) has a build-up of
alkalyd
or is rough, use emery cloth to smooth seat for proper
seal.
9. If the
flush valve seat (12) is badly worn, then the flush
valve
must be replaced or reseated with a reseating
tool.
10. Check overflow tube (14) for wear or damage. Replace
if needed by removing the guide (11), the lift rod (9)
and the
tank ball (10). To remove, turn the overflow
tube in a counter-
clockwise direction.
11. Turn on the water at the water supply valve (1).
12. After the toilet tank fills, check that the toilet
is not running.
If the toilet is running, re-check the alignment of
the tank ball.
